There are various reasons to adopt a certain method or technique. It could be because it is deemed to be the most effective tactic, the easiest, most enjoyable or most exciting. On some occasions lure fishing can tick all the boxes and surface lures in particular can do just that.
I tend to use surface lures in water that is too shallow to employ subsurface lures and because the sight of a bass hitting a surface lure is an exhilarating moment.
I like to employ these tactics in calm clear water with evening being the prime time though not essential by any means.
I am not sure how important lure pattern is but I have had success with Storm Chug Bugs and my latest toy the IMA Popeye.
My latest session brought a spectacular missed take and a successful connection with a bass of about 3lb.
