An unproductive day

An unproductive day

I had heard tales that that there was an abundance of spider crab to be harvested from the coast and whilst I have not set out to catch any smoothound this year I thought it a good idea to gather a few in light of the fact that my son James has been showing renewed interest in getting out on the shoreline.
In addition to this of course spider crab are outstanding bait for bass and I have been intended to complete an article I have been writing on natural baits.
Anyway Sunday midday saw me meeting up with long time mate and bait collecting expert Kevin.
Bait collecting is in itself great fun and scurrying around amongst rock pools and gullies brings back many childhood memories. Timing is paramount for collecting bait and we had timed our visit to coincide with one of the lowest tides of the year.

However after an hour of searching it became clear that something was not right. Just half a dozen crabs to carry away was not what I had hoped for! We put the lack of crabs down to a big ground swell in recent days that must have driven the crab out into deeper water. Next year I need to get there earlier!

Late afternoon saw a mullet fishing excursion with two fellow club members.
The tide pushed in fast as we launched our two-hook paternoster rigs into the local harbour.
John Avery was first to hook a mullet and soon had a small mullet to hand; an encouraging start. Half an hour later my own rod tip signaled interest jerking briskly before springing back. I struck into the fish that splashed noisily on the surface. The rod took on a pleasing curve as what appeared to be a good fish lunged around. Suddenly all went slack! I could not believe I had been broken, 8lb bs line and a Big Drennan Feeder. Investigation showed that the three-way swivel was the week link and had parted midway! Hook a good fish and if there is a week link its goodbye fish.
I guess I will be buying a fresh brand of three-way swivels from now on.
The tide pushed in and high water came and went without further interest in our baits.
An unproductive day you could say but then we enjoyed it and learnt a few lessons.
